School is open!Beginning this September, the primary
school has 350 day students all of whom receive a big noon meal. There
are 100 students attending the new secondary school--these youngsters
use the primary school building after the little ones leave at noon.
Security wall has been built. Traditionally, throughout
Haiti, significant buildings or compounds have “security”
wall—work toward completing ours has been aided by U.S. missionaries
employing Haitians to do the real work!
Gardening is great.The children are maintaining a
good vegetable garden—140 ft. by 20 ft. Beans, squash, melons
and peas are the main crops. This is also a vocational exercise.The
directors hope to purchase an adjacent 1 acre gardening lot, should
funds become available
English as a second language.Instruction has begun
for teaching English to the orphans and teachers. Having some fluency
in English is a great help in finding employment in Haiti.
Toyota pickups are the way to go in Haiti. Our orphanage
has obtained a good one through a generous donation. It is transports
teachers, supplies and is ready for use in emergencies.
Expanded Utilities.The solar power and running water
have been extended to serve the surrounding community by providing
well water and several street lamps. The children seem
to be in excellent health now. They are “full of themselves”
and rarin’ to go!
Vocational school: The vocational school construction
is well underway thanks to a generous donation by a family here in
Virginia. Sewing, mechanics, welding, carpentry, farming, English
instruction, handicrafts and art are some of things to be offered.
The orphanage organizers in the community have used some of our funds
to drill 8 water wells in the community. This is a huge health benefit--perhaps
the most important gift of all.
